This workshop builds a working model of trauma and its manifestations in children, using discussion, case studies and introducing a theory of trauma before considering the role of foster carers in the healing process

  • Why many children in care are traumatized
  • How our own values affect how we respond to trauma

""Death is part of life" can be a helpful cliche, but is it enough to help us to adapt to and understand the feelings that a child is having about their significant and sometimes frequent separations and losses?     Attention is given to enhancing the carers'

understanding of grief reactions in others and in

children.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course is intended to enhance foster carers' knowledge and understanding about grief processes in both adults and children.  By the end of the course you will understand:

  • Your own reactions to grieving in others
  • How to identify where/how loss occurs across the lifespan
  • Diverse responses to loss and bereavement

Introduces the carers to specific and constituent aspects of counselling skills

using a series of scenarios and encouraging and enabling the practise of newly-learnt counselling skills.

COURSE OUTLINE

  1. To enhance and improve the verbal communication skills of participants, especially the ability to listen, to respect silence and to communicate empathic understanding.  Emphasis will be given to working in groups
  2. To introduce trainees to experiential learning processes that will include a high element of personal growth work. Developing further self-confidence and self-esteem
  3. To enable foster carers to better manage emotional conversations with their foster children

 

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course the foster carers should:

  • Have a basic understanding of what counselling is about and compare and contrast with other forms of helping eg advice, assessment
  • Acquire some basic skills to further improve their own communication processes.
  • Discuss the inequality of the power relationship between the adult and the child and show an understanding of issues of difference
  •

N.B.

On completion of the course, foster carers must:

 

  • Distinguish the distinctiveness of the counselling approach when compared and contrasted with other psychological interventions
  • Show increased self-awareness and self-confidence, be able to evidence personal growth and demonstrate insight in to their own strengths and areas of development
  • Fulfil the assessment work to receive the NOCN Certificate

After carefully creating an ethos of safety, the workshop embarks on the multi-faceted aspects of sexual abuse.

Further areas covered are age-appropriate sexual  development and sexual language in children; case study and role of carer and other professionals in the healing process for children.

  • Increased understand of how different forms of child abuse are interrelated
  • Understanding of sexual development in children
  • Understanding of opportunities and limitations of what a foster carer can do to support a victim of child sexual abuse
